Happy Birthday America PDF Print E-mail

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD . . . (Ps. 33: 12a).  This past July 4th marked 233 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Since the courageous signing of that bold and assertive document, it is obvious that as a nation we have indeed left the principles and moorings, which served to help make us the great nation we have become.

I love my country; I love the flag that represents the United States of America.  “I pledge allegiance one nation under God...”  I enjoy the songs that strike a patriotic nerve in my heart.  I look forward to the celebrations that take place around this time.  I hope I never take for granted the cost and sacrifice of the many lives that now makes America the greatest place to live on earth.  America is indeed the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Considering the verse I cited from Psalm 33: 12, I realize the historical context must be given preference in obtaining the correct meaning.  The verse is to Israel and the people of God whom He has graciously chosen as His own.  With that understood, there are some principles of application that we can glean as the people of God, the church, who live in America.  Listen to words of the first commandment God to gave to His people: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”  Correlations can be made with the first commandment and Ps. 33: 12.

From commandment number one, we are told very explicitly not to have any other gods before the True and Living God of the Bible.  As Christians, it is certainly easy for us to have other gods before the Lord Jesus Christ.  There are so many gods to choose from.  Many of these gods are subtle and many are more obvious.  You can choose from the gods of pleasure and materialism, which ultimately leads to self-gratification and greed.  There are also the gods of complacency and compromise, which inevitably leads to worldliness and corruption.  In fact, if we place anything or anyone above the Lord Jesus and our love for Him we are guilty of the sin of idolatry in our lives, a violation of commandment number one.  The Lord Jesus reiterates that truth in Matthew 22: 34-40 (Mk. 12: 28-34; Lk. 10: 25-37).

The psalmist states very clearly that God will bless the nation whose God is the LORD.  By way of digression, keep in mind how the psalmist spells the word LORD.  He uses all capital letters.  Whenever you read that spelling in the text, you are reading literally the personal name for God, which is Yahweh.  We have transliterated the word to Jehovah from various translations.

How should we think of our nation in the context of Psalm 33: 12?  Obviously, America has never been a pure Christian nation anymore than Israel was ever entirely godly.  America does, however, have strong Christian roots and deep foundations in the Bible, God, and truth.  America was blessed by God in its early history because in large measure her God was the LORD.  In those early days of our country, large numbers of people sought God fervently.  God heard and God blessed our nation in great ways.

Sadly, our country presently is anything but Christian; in fact, it is militantly secular.  We have grown to become a “me” oriented nation which is certainly seeping its way into our churches.  We have government-funded abortions, abortion on demand, the institution of marriage between a man and a woman has been brought into question, the ongoing wave of liberalism in our churches, and the ever present shift to the left on political matters.  As this tide continues, what will become of the nation whose God must be the LORD.

I love this great land we call America.  As a husband, father, and now grandfather, pastor, and Christian, by the grace of God, I am going to endeavor not to be guilty of breaking the first commandment.  A young scribe came to Jesus with this question: “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matt. 36-39).

Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Karl Barth is considered to be one of the greatest theologians in the 20th century.  Although I disagree with many of his theological positions, I do admit that Dr. Barth was certainly one of the most influential theologians in the church in the last 100 years.  Several years ago while giving a series of lectures in Chicago and in Princeton, New Jersey a question was posed to the Swiss theologian.  “Dr. Barth what is the greatest thought that has ever passed through your mind?”  Barth paused for quite a long time as he obviously gave serious thought about his answer.  Then he raised his head and said with childlike simplicity: “Jesus loves me!  This I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

What an arresting and overwhelming thought that is absolutely true.  That statement is from a children’s Sunday school song, and yet it is certainly the greatest truth any person can realize and know for themselves.

The author of the song makes a bold and endearing declaration: “Jesus loves me.”  As with any declarative statement that is made, there must be some basis of support.  We know that Jesus loves us, only because the Bible makes it known to us.  In fact, the Bible reveals many things about ourselves, the Person of God, and His purposes and plan for the world in which we live.

As a Christian, I am convinced of many characteristics about the Bible.  Hence, my world view is formulated and governed on the basis of the Bible.  I am convinced that the Bible is entirely and completely inspired which literally means “breathed of God.”  I am convinced that the Bible is entirely infallible and completely inerrant.  I am also convinced that the Bible is immutable – it will not change or pass away.  Hence, the Bible is completely trustworthy in al and in every area of life.  As well, the Bible is totally absolute in everything that it says because of what it is.  Furthermore, I am convinced that the Bible is completely and entirely authoritative over every facet of my life.  The Bible has the right to tell me how to live my life.

It only makes sense that if I believe that Jesus loves me on the basis of the Bible, then I must believe everything in the Bible.  I certainly do not have the right to believe one Biblical statement and then deny another.  As well, if I am going to accept plainly and literally that Jesus loves me from the Bible, then I must accept plainly and literally (within the context and based upon the language) every statement in the Bible.  As a point of digression, I am convinced that the Bible centers on the Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, no Scripture portion is properly read and understood, until it leads to Jesus (John 5: 39; Acts 1: 16; 17: 2, 3; 18: 28; 26: 22-23).

As Christians, we discover the wonderful doctrines and deep truths that are cardinal for our Christian faith in the Bible.  We then have the high privilege and awesome responsibility to protect and maintain those great doctrines and teachings that are derived from the Bible.  Everything I know and learn about God is derived from the Scriptures.

I only know that Jesus the Son of God loves me, because the Bible declares it to be true.

We find relevance in a children’s Sunday school song that must be a true affirmation of every Christian:

“The B. I. B. L. E. yes that is the book for me;

I stand alone on the Word of God, the B. I. B. L.E.”

I thankfully and joyfully acknowledge from my within heart the wonderful words of Paul to the Galatian churches: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live: yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal. 2: 20)

We learn all that we need to know for life, happiness, joy, peace, and salvation in the Bible.  We discover the greatest truth any of us can ever know: “Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.”  It is my prayer that you have the assurance that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior.  As a Christian I trust that your life reflects the Lordship of Christ.
